AICTS Pune Achieves Breakthrough in Treating Ultra-Rare Cardiac Complication

This significant achievement underscores the high order of cardiac surgical expertise, advanced pre-operative planning

In a rare feat of global cardiac excellence in uniform, doctors at the Army Institute of Cardiothoracic Sciences (AICTS), Pune, have successfully treated four patients suffering from an ultra-rare and life-threatening complication concerning a coronary stent infection, with only around 40 such cases reported worldwide.

The patients had previously undergone treatment at civil and private hospitals across the country and were referred for advanced management. The AICTS team carried out complex surgical treatment involving the extraction or exclusion of the infected coronary stent aneurysm, followed by bypass grafting distal to the affected segment. The intervention resulted in the successful resolution of the complication in all four cases.

This significant achievement underscores the high order of cardiac surgical expertise, advanced pre-operative planning, and critical care capability available within the Armed Forces Medical Services. It also reflects the ability of military medical institutions to manage some of the rarest and most challenging cardiovascular conditions with precision and clinical excellence.

AICTS, Pune, continues to remain at the forefront of specialised cardiothoracic care, combining cutting-edge medical capability with disciplined clinical execution in the service of the nation.

The accomplishment reaffirms the Armed Forces Medical Services’ enduring commitment to excellence in tertiary healthcare, innovation in complex clinical management, and delivery of world-class treatment outcomes.
