The Bengal Obstetric & Gynaecological Society (BOGS) successfully organised the inauguration of Health Mela 2026, a major women’s health initiative, at Salt Lake, Kolkata. The event was held in the esteemed presence of Chief Guest José Ramirez Barreto, a legendary footballer. The programme was led by Dr M. M. Samsuzzoha, President of BOGS, along with Dr Tulika Jha, Honorary Secretary, BOGS, and Dr Dibyendu Banerjee, Past President and Chief Advisor, Women’s Health Initiative, BOGS.
Health Mela 2026 was organised as part of BOGS’ ongoing commitment to improving women’s health through awareness and action. The event focused on important issues such as violence against women, teenage health, cancer prevention, and overall wellness. It aimed to bridge the gap between health education and access to essential medical services, especially for women from underprivileged communities.
The Health Mela featured expert-led discussions, live CPR demonstrations, free health screenings, and a mega HPV vaccination drive. Women were provided free consultations and tests, including haemoglobin estimation for anaemia and thalassemia, mammography for early breast cancer detection, bone mineral densitometry for osteoporosis, and HPV DNA testing for cervical cancer screening. Out of the 2500 doses of free cervical cancer vaccines planned under this initiative, BOGS has already administered 1300 doses to girls from underprivileged sections of society
Addressing the gathering, Dr M. M. Samsuzzoha, President of BOGS, spoke about the importance of turning awareness into real action. He said that early detection, timely treatment, and education are key to saving women’s lives, especially for those who have limited access to healthcare facilities.
Dr Tulika Jha, Honorary Secretary of BOGS, highlighted the society’s 89-year legacy of service in women’s healthcare. She reiterated BOGS’ commitment to ensuring that women from marginalised sections receive quality healthcare and preventive services throughout Kolkata and its districts.
Health Mela 2026 also included interactive activities and community engagement initiatives, making health education accessible and relatable for the general public. The event concluded with a health awareness walk, encouraging participants to adopt healthier lifestyles and take charge of their well-being.
As a founding member of FOGSI, BOGS continues to play a vital role in advancing women’s health at both the regional and national levels. Through initiatives like Health Mela 2026, the society continues to translate its theme for 2025–2026, “Saving Women’s Lives: From Awareness to Action,” into meaningful impact.
BOGS expressed gratitude to all partners, stakeholders, healthcare professionals, volunteers, and members of the media for their support in making Health Mela 2026 a successful step towards a healthier future for women and girls.
