Health authorities monitor HMPV trends to address growing respiratory health challenges.
Indian health authorities are closely observing the spread of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) following confirmed cases in states such as Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Gujarat. Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda has assured the public that the virus, while capable of causing respiratory illnesses, poses no significant threat of widespread transmission akin to COVID-19. "HMPV has been a recognized virus since 2001 and typically results in mild respiratory conditions, often comparable to the common cold," Nadda stated, emphasizing that there is no link between India’s cases and the recent surge in respiratory illnesses reported in China.
In Karnataka, two cases have been confirmed, prompting the Directorate of Medical Education to release an advisory titled "Do Not Panic, Be Aware." The cases involve a three-month-old girl and an eight-month-old boy in Bengaluru, both of whom are recovering well after receiving care. The state government has directed hospitals to remain vigilant, tracking Influenza-like Illness (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Infections (SARI) to manage the situation effectively. Karnataka Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao highlighted that the virus’s limited transmissibility and manageable symptoms make panic unnecessary.
Meanwhile, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and other health agencies are collaborating to investigate and monitor cases across affected regions. Globally, the World Health Organization (WHO) is also evaluating the situation and will provide updates to aid India’s response. With seven confirmed cases nationwide, experts emphasize that preventive measures such as maintaining respiratory hygiene and early medical intervention are sufficient to handle the virus. The government continues to prioritize public safety, ensuring that the situation remains under control.
