OMRON is building a seamless bridge between home and hospital care

With over 400 million blood pressure monitors sold globally, OMRON Healthcare continues to lead the way in preventive cardiovascular care. Guided by its “Going for ZERO” vision, zero heart attacks and strokes, the company is redefining home healthcare through connected technologies and strategic global partnerships.

From the globally adopted OMRON connect app to collaborations with Tricog in India and Luscii in Europe, OMRON is building a seamless bridge between home and hospital care. Its innovations in AI-powered monitoring and ECG-integrated devices are making early detection of hypertension and atrial fibrillation more accessible than ever.

In this conversation with Medtech Spectrum, Hiroshi Ogawa, Managing Director, and Kumud Kandpal, General Manager Marketing, discuss OMRON’s legacy of trust, its digital health evolution, and how the company is driving the future of preventive healthcare worldwide.

OMRON Healthcare has now sold over 400 million blood pressure monitors worldwide. What do you believe has been the key factor behind this sustained global adoption over the decades?

OMRON Healthcare’s success in selling over 400 million blood pressure monitors globally stems from its unwavering commitment to accuracy, usability, and preventive care. Since 1973, OMRON has focused on making blood pressure monitoring accessible at home, empowering individuals to take charge of their health. Each device represents a connection with people striving to prevent illness, and the trust built with healthcare professionals worldwide.

How has the shift from clinic-based to home-based blood pressure monitoring changed patient outcomes, particularly in the early detection of conditions like hypertension and atrial fibrillation?

The shift from clinic-based to home-based monitoring has transformed patient outcomes, especially in detecting silent risks like hypertension and atrial fibrillation (AFib). Regular home monitoring helps patients notice subtle symptoms and trends, enabling earlier intervention. Technologies like IntelliSense™ AFib now allow users to detect AFib during routine blood pressure checks, making early diagnosis more accessible.

OMRON has been advancing digital health platforms alongside its devices. How do these platforms enhance preventive care and support patients in managing their cardiovascular health at home?

OMRON connect has been supporting users since its launch in 2016, and today it’s used in approximately 140 countries, with over 9.45 million users worldwide. This global reach allows OMRON to stay closely connected with millions of users, helping them manage their cardiovascular health more effectively.

The app automatically calculates weekly and monthly averages, helping users track trends over time. It also allows data to be printed or exported as a PDF, making it easy to share with healthcare providers. This reduces the risk of forgotten records or manual entry errors and helps doctors quickly understand the patient’s condition.

In fiscal year 2024, OMRON fully acquired Luscii, a remote care service company based in the Netherlands. By integrating Luscii’s expertise, OMRON aims to strengthen remote healthcare services that connect doctors and patients, and create synergy between hospital data and home monitoring.

In India, OMRON has also formed a strategic partnership with Tricog, leveraging their ECG analysis team and AI technology to develop solutions that support early detection of heart conditions using ECG data recorded at home.

Moving forward, OMRON will continue to enhance its digital health services to bridge the gap between home and clinical care, supporting early risk detection and timely medical intervention.

With distribution in over 130 countries, what strategies does OMRON employ to ensure that home blood pressure monitoring reaches communities with limited healthcare resources?

OMRON is committed to making home blood pressure monitoring accessible not only in urban centers but also in regional and rural communities. We actively engage in awareness campaigns that highlight the risks of hypertension and the importance of regular home monitoring. These efforts include visiting local areas, hosting educational events, and working with community health workers to ensure that people understand how to manage their blood pressure effectively.

To reach even more people, OMRON is actively building strategic partnerships with distributors and expanding the number of retail locations that carry our products. We also develop and provide promotional tools to support in-store staff, helping them better communicate the value of home blood pressure monitoring to customers.

Looking ahead, what new technologies or product innovations is OMRON focusing on to further advance preventive cardiovascular care and support your “Going for ZERO” vision?

OMRON’s ultimate goal is to create a world where people everywhere can live healthy and fulfilling lives through preventive healthcare. To achieve this, we are accelerating innovation in both technology and services, with a strong focus on early detection and timely intervention.

We are actively developing AI-powered solutions, expanding our digital health platforms, and strengthening our ECG technology offerings. Our ECG-integrated blood pressure monitors allow users to record both blood pressure and ECG data at home, supporting early detection of conditions like atrial fibrillation.

Strategic partnerships play a key role in our innovation efforts. In India, we are working with Tricog, combining their expertise in ECG analysis and AI to create solutions that support early diagnosis of heart conditions using home-recorded data. In Europe, our acquisition of Luscii, a remote care company, enables us to connect hospital and home data more seamlessly and enhance telehealth services.

In emerging markets, we are committed to expanding access to home blood pressure monitoring by developing devices that are affordable, easy to use, and widely available. This ensures that more people can take proactive steps in managing their cardiovascular health.

Through these efforts, OMRON continues to advance its “Going for ZERO” vision—zero heart attacks and strokes—by empowering individuals and healthcare professionals with innovative tools and connected care solutions.

Beyond devices, OMRON emphasizes education to raise awareness of hypertension risks. How does the company engage with patients and healthcare professionals to promote preventive healthcare globally?

Beyond devices, OMRON actively promotes hypertension awareness through collaborations with organizations like the World Hypertension League and events such as the International Society of Hypertension Congress. Educational initiatives like the OMRON Academy provide training and resources for both healthcare professionals and the public, reinforcing the importance of early detection and lifestyle management.
