Mahkota Medical Centre has broken ground on a new 10-storey hospital block that will expand the hospital’s total capacity to 430 beds by 2029. The development is Mahkota’s first major physical expansion since the hospital opened in 1994 and marks a significant renewal of one of Melaka’s longest-established private tertiary hospitals to meet the evolving needs of patients in Melaka, Malaysia, and the region.
The expansion will enhance Mahkota's capacity to manage more complex cases through expanded critical care, advanced clinical infrastructure, additional inpatient and day care beds, and enhanced cancer services, while improving access, parking and patient amenities.
The groundbreaking ceremony, themed “A New Chapter in Healthcare Begins”, was officiated by Datuk Seri Utama Ab Rauf Bin Yusoh, Chief Minister of Melaka, and attended by representatives from the healthcare sector, corporate partners and the local community.
Meeting the health needs of an ageing population
Slated to be ready in phases by 2028, the new block will incorporate SMART hospital and technology-driven solutions designed to improve patient care, operational efficiency and accessibility, including:
Building on the existing hospital's capacity with additional inpatient wards featuring more single rooms, new operating theatres, enhanced day care facilities, an expanded cancer centre and additional clinical support services.
“This expansion will position us as the largest private hospital in Melaka by 2029, while advancing our SMART Hospital journey. By investing in advanced clinical infrastructure, technology and workflows, we are strengthening our ability to deliver more complex care while providing a better experience for both patients and our healthcare teams," said Ms Teo Chin Yee, CEO of Mahkota Medical Centre.
Beyond infrastructure, Mahkota is investing in human talent. The expansion will increase its nursing and allied health workforce by up to 10%, creating new career opportunities while strengthening the healthcare talent pipeline to support Melaka's growing healthcare and medical tourism ambitions.
The new hospital block builds on Mahkota’s track record in healthcare innovation, including the introduction of Malaysia’s first next generation SMART ward and the country’s first Hinotori robotic-assisted surgical system. Mahkota is also the first hospital in Malaysia to be awarded the Joint Commission International (JCI) Triple Gold Seal, as well as the first hospital in Southern Malaysia to achieve accreditation under the new 7th Edition MSQH standards, concurrent milestones that underscore its leadership in healthcare quality and patient-centered care.
The expansion comes at a pivotal time as Malaysia's population continues to age and demand for healthcare services rises. According to the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM), Malaysians aged 60 and above are projected to account for 15.3% of the population by 2050, while those aged 65 and above will reach 18.3% by 2060. Similar demographic trends are evident in Melaka, where the population is expected to grow from 998,400 in 2020 to approximately 1.14 million by 2030.
As one of Malaysia's older states, Melaka is expected to see increasing demand for specialist care, chronic disease management and healthcare infrastructure to support its ageing population. Across Southeast Asia, HMI Medical is also seeing the rising demand for specialised healthcare driven by ageing populations, the growing burden of chronic diseases and greater patient mobility.
