Suraksha Diagnostic Limited, one of the leading diagnostics chains in Eastern India, organised a Genomics and Foetal Health workshop aiming to educate and empower expectant women and their families with accurate, science-based knowledge about the role of foetal medicine and genetic screening in ensuring a healthy pregnancy.
The workshop was led by a gynaecologist and Fetal Medicine Specialist, Dr. Pradip Goswami. The event was also graced by the presence of Upasana Mukherjee, Genetic Counsellor, BGCI Level II Certified, Medical Geneticist, Clinical Genomics. The workshop highlighted how in every 100 pregnancies, while most babies are born healthy, around 8–10 per cent may have minor or major congenital issues, some of which are linked to non-curable genetic disorders. Genomic technology now makes it possible to detect many of these conditions even before birth by analysing foetal DNA extracted from the mother's womb. This enables prospective parents to be informed about the child’s genetic health, understand the risks, and make appropriate decisions about the current and future pregnancies. Suraksha Clinic and Diagnostics’ Genomic testing lab can detect chromosomal abnormalities like Down syndrome, Edwards Syndrome, Patau syndrome, as well as sex chromosome aneuploidies. Providing Eastern India’s largest and most advanced genomic testing facilities, Suraksha Clinic and Diagnostics has made a considerable contribution to the future of preventive care by enabling early, accurate risk detection and better treatment planning.
Dr Goswami highlighted how, in the present time, with shrinking family units and limited support systems, it is crucial to ensure that both mother and baby are safe and healthy during and after pregnancy. This workshop focused on the growing importance of foetal medicine and its integration with the rapidly advancing field of genomics. These medical advancements now allow for early diagnosis of congenital and genetic conditions during pregnancy, often as early as the third month.
Dr Goswami pointed out that by combining foetal medicine and genetic testing under one roof, Suraksha Clinic and Diagnostics ensures faster diagnosis, better quality of care, and more personalised guidance for families.
