Siemens Healthineers Leads the Way in Laboratory Sustainability with ACT Ecolabel Certification for Over 150 Diagnostic Reagents

First in the industry to achieve dual certification for both reagents and analysers within its Atellica portfolio

Siemens Healthineers has achieved a significant sustainability milestone with the My Green Lab ACT Ecolabel Certification awarded to more than 150 of its immunoassay and clinical chemistry reagents. These reagents are used extensively in medical laboratories worldwide for in vitro diagnostic testing. With this recognition, Siemens Healthineers becomes the first company to earn certification for both reagents and analysers in its Atellica portfolio.

Among the certified reagents are notable innovations such as the High-Sensitivity Troponin I assay – the first in the United States to assist in diagnosing heart attacks and identifying the risk of future cardiac events – and the Enhanced Liver Fibrosis (ELF) Test, the first prognostic tool to assess the likelihood of disease progression in patients with advanced fibrosis due to metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH).

The ACT Ecolabel certification, granted by My Green Lab, is a globally recognised standard for laboratory sustainability. Products undergo a rigorous and independent assessment across key environmental impact categories including manufacturing practices, energy and water consumption, chemical usage, waste, and packaging. The certification provides laboratories and procurement specialists with transparent and verified data to support more sustainable product choices.

“Resilient performance and environmental responsibility matter to labs of all sizes,” said Lisa Rose, Head of Core Laboratory Solutions for Diagnostics at Siemens Healthineers. “Our assays, combined with our instruments, deliver high-quality testing solutions while helping laboratories operate more sustainably.”

Siemens Healthineers’ Atellica analysers are designed to support environmentally conscious lab operations and have demonstrated energy use reductions of up to 48 percent in reported cases. Furthering its commitment, the company has introduced new sustainable packaging for specialty laboratory reagents, replacing plastic inlays with cardboard. This initiative is expected to reduce 39 tonnes of polystyrene annually and cut carbon emissions by approximately 161 tonnes – equivalent to the weight of 20 vehicles or the yearly energy consumption of 18 average US households.

James Connelly, CEO of My Green Lab, commented, “As the leading laboratory sustainability certification body in life sciences and healthcare, we are proud to support Siemens Healthineers in advancing global environmental stewardship. Together, we are enabling clinical laboratories to reduce their ecological impact without compromising diagnostic excellence.”

Siemens Healthineers’ sustainability leadership was recognised at the 2025 Breakthroughs Conference and Exhibition, where it received a prestigious Sustainability Award from Premier, Inc., a leading healthcare improvement organisation. The ELF Test was also acknowledged as a breakthrough innovation in immunoassay development.

With sustainability now a critical priority across healthcare systems, Siemens Healthineers continues to set new benchmarks in environmentally responsible diagnostics and laboratory operations worldwide.
